FilmClub: movie picks from the friends you actually trust
A social movie app concept where your friends' viewing, not strangers' reviews, helps you decide what to watch.

Outcome
Testers moved through the core flow without friction in the final prototype. A messaging problem found in early testing was fixed and confirmed in a retest.

01 · THE PROBLEM
My real friends' movie picks were getting lost.
02 · WHAT I DID
Ran a survey, interviewed 5 movie lovers, then prototyped and tested.
03 · THE RESULT
Testers moved through the core flow without friction.

01 · Problem
The problem: my real friends were getting lost
My real friends’ movie picks were getting lost. I wanted a social movie app that would surface trusted recommendations instead of strangers’ reviews.
• 86% said it’s hard to choose what to watch next
• 85% never post reviews or comments
• 58% want to talk about movies more online
“I just want to see what my Top 8 friends have been watching.”
The challenge: make friends’ picks visible without asking people to post more.
02 · Decisions
Key decisions
1. Lead with the movie, not the person
The feed opens with the movie first, then shows who watched it. This keeps the focus on the pick instead of the person posting.
Why: the movie-first feed makes trusted recommendations the focus.

2. Make it social without asking anyone to post
Instead of reviews, the app surfaces lightweight activity: who watched, who saved, and who messaged about a movie.
Tradeoff: lightweight viewing activity replaces the need for public posts.
3. Private messages instead of public comments
Discussion happens in private messages so friends can react without creating a public thread.
Why: private conversations let friends talk about a movie without a public thread.

04 · Testing
What testing changed
Early testing revealed a messaging problem. I revised the interaction and returned to testing to confirm the fix.
What I changed: revised the messaging interaction, then tested the updated flow again.
Inline image placeholder: before/after messaging comparison
• Identified friction in the messaging flow
• Revised the interaction before retesting
• Confirmed the fix in a retest
05 · Final Design
The final design
Prototype instructions: open the feed, tap a movie, then follow the messaging flow to see how the final design works.
06 · Reflection
Constraints, outcome and reflection
Constraints: this was a solo, self-initiated concept, explored through a prototype rather than a launched product.
Outcome: testers moved through the core flow without friction in the final prototype. The early messaging problem was fixed and confirmed in a retest.
What I’d do differently
• Test with a broader range of movie-watching habits
• Explore how recommendations change as friendship groups grow
